Early start to the season

The windy season usually starts in November in Cayman, but we got lucky this last weekend with some wind building up during the week into the weekend. Saturday morning started off fairly light, but continued to build through-out the day, and was around 25mph NE by the late afternoon.

Sunday was blowing hard in the morning then tapered off in the afternoon. There is still some tropical storm type weather hanging around in the Caribbean, so not too sure what caused this early start, but it did seem like cold front type weather.

Another 2 weeks and we should be properly into it!

Summer sailing with the Superfreak

Since sailing Hot Sails on the last trip to Maui almost 2 months ago (gasp!) I’ve been intrigued by the Superfreak concept. I mainly sailed the new Smack 2011 there, which I enjoyed, but noticed a lot of people sailing Superfreaks. I’ve also read about them on various blogs, and people seem to sing their praises.

I was lucky enough to be donated one (a 5.8) by my mate Chris, so went out yesterday for a summertime blast yesterday at Sand Cay on it. I like how quiet it is and it’s ability to absorb the gusts, as well as just how retro it looks!

Swell on the way to Maui

From what I’m reading on various blogs and speaking to some of the local sailors here, it seems there is an out-of-season NW swell forecast for the weekend! So far had some great days out mainly at Kanaha and yesterday at Sprecks. The wind has been up and I’ve been out most days on either a 4.8 or 4.3 on the 80l Starboard Kode. Was sailing out at Sprecks and pretty sure it was either Francisco Goya or Josh Stone sailing there too pulling perfect push loops and forwards on every run out. Can’t wait for the swell to arrive. Ho’okipa anyone?

First day out at Kanaha

After a long day of flying from Grand Cayman, via Miami, LA and then on to Maui, we finally made it. Jet-lagged like crazy, but we were happy to be in Maui. We made it to Kanaha after hitting the rental shops around 2pm and on the water shortly after.
